What is Praise & Worship or P&W Music?
Praise & Worship is music that is commonly found in contemporary churches of
today. Short and easy to sing (and remember) choruses that repeat several times
make the style perfect for corporate worship because even people who aren't
familiar with a particular song can sing along with ease after hearing one or
two repeats of the chorus.
Some of the more popular Praise and Worship artists of today are:
Chris Tomlin
Darrell Evans
Matt Redman
David Crowder Band
Hillsong or Hillsong United
Delirious?
Passion or 722
SONICFLOOd
Casting Crowns
Praise & Worship is what I call the hymns of the modern contemporary church.
The church has historically supported and financed some of the most talented and
cutting edge artist's of the day. For instance Michelangelo, Mozart, Bach, etc.
I feel this is simply a continuation of a practice that has gone on for over a
thousand years.
Modern Praise & Worship normally features instrumentation similar to a rock band
or modern country...
1 or 2 electric guitars
1 or 2 acoustic guitars
bass guitar
drums
keyboard
1 or more vocalists (normally referred to as Worship Leaders)
There are variations. Sometimes you will see Worship Bands with sax or
harmonica.
What is Contemporary Christian Music?
Contemporary Christian Music is music that fits in to all forms of modern music...Rock, Blues, Country, Rap / Hip Hop, Urban, Punk, Heavy Metal, etc. What defines it as "Christian" is the subject or theme of the lyrics. The lyrics are positive or clearly Christian themed. Some examples are...Although this music is themed Christian it may not be intended to be played in the church for Worship services.

Toby Mac

Derek Webb
Often this music is played in youth groups or "post-modern" churches.
Many openly Christian musicians do not classify themselves in the CCM genre at all. Many consider themselves Christian by faith but not necessarily by genre. These bands can be in a difficult quandary. They may be openly Christian but refuse to categorized as Christian Music bands. They are often ostracized by both Christians AND secular audiences.
Some examples...
Switchfoot
U2
Creed
Hopefully this forum will service the needs of all of the above.
